Dignity & Small-Time Hustles

Mike’s blatant rip-off of my ground-breaking post on the evolving state of condiment unit pricing at fast food eateries reminded me of an observation at (where else?) McDonald’s the other day demonstrating consumers are likewise capable of stinginess.

While I’m waiting on my iced coffee, a gentleman of approximately 50 years orders a few items and “a small cup for water.” It’s obvious to me, but not the cashier, he expects it to be free. The cashier catches on only after the customer first protests a charge for a small soda cup and second a larger charge for bottled water.

The cashier’s in a bind because this is a free-refill MickeyD’s where all the soda taps are in the dining area, not behind the counter. Entrusting a free cup to this man would be an exercise in discretion beyond the cashier’s pay grade. The cashier hollers to the shift supervisor as the customer’s voice rises to scene-making levels, threatening to walk away from this $4.32 transaction altogether! He seems genuinely indignant that a restaurant wouldn’t offer municipal water freely.

The supervisor wisely nips this conflict in the bud; magnanimously offering a free child-size cup just as my iced coffee arrives. The gentleman makes it to the fountains as I’m getting my straw and proceeds to fill his cup… with Sprite!
