“Wrestling isn’t fake. It’s predetermined. So what?”

Hulk Hogan, My Life Outside the Ring.

I think people frowning on pro wrestling entertainment assume highlighting it’s staged nature should dampen fans’ enthusiasm. It shouldn’t. As Hogan suggests, there’s often a real, quasi-gymnastic, somewhat-improvised performance going on, involving rather large bodies that are exceptionally well-trained (even accounting for anabolic help). It’s theater, sort of.

In rare cases, scripting adds a layer of intrigue. For example, the infamous Montreal Screwjob, where Vince McMahon double-crossed Bret ‘Hitman’ Hart on an agreed-to predetermined victory, resulted in a real-life assault of McMahon by Hart, and briefly risked the real-life disintegration of the company as other talent fretted over fairness and creative control.
